Educational Sailing Charters in the Sea of Cortez
Small-group sailing experiences focused on seamanship, confidence, and time at sea.
Our Charters
Beyond Horizons Charters are educational sailing experiences — not luxury vacations or bareboat rentals. These passages exist to make the larger vision of Beyond Horizons possible: creating sailors who understand, participate, and respect the art of passage-making.
All instruction is hands-on aboard the cutter-rigged 1982 Hans Christian 33T, Prism, with Captain Corah (Certified USCG Captain) and Jon (40,000 sea miles and multiple extensive refits). You’ll stand watch, manage sails, navigate, and share responsibility for the vessel. Apprenticeship-style learning ensures real offshore competence, safety, and seamanship.
You can expect:
• Direct instruction from Corah and Jon
• Hands-on seamanship and shared responsibility
• Your own private berth for solo lessons
• Time to learn, ask questions, and move at the pace of the sea
You should not expect:
• A resort-style itinerary
• Crew doing all the work for you
• Rushed, performance-driven sailing

This is a private overnight instructional passage from Annapolis to Virginia Beach aboard Prism, a 1982 Hans Christian 33. Led by Captain Corah (Certified USCG Captain) and Engineer Jon (40,000 sea miles and multiple extensive refits), this experience focuses on real offshore seamanship and night sailing. Learn to navigate, change and trim sails, and avoid vessel traffic in darkness through proper maneuvering, navigation light interpretation, and understanding safety zones. Gain practical experience standing watch and managing life underway, including fatigue and meals on passage. Completion of our 5-hour private lesson is required prior to booking. Limited space available.
This is a private multi-day offshore passage from Virginia Beach direct to New York City aboard Prism, a 1982 Hans Christian 33. Led by Captain Corah (Certified USCG Captain) and Engineer Jon (40,000 sea miles and multiple extensive refits), this 300-mile journey is designed for sailors seeking real offshore experience. Participants will take part in navigation, offshore sail management, weather routing, traffic avoidance, watch standing, and full passage-making routines. With favorable weather, we aim to arrive in New York Harbor in time for July 4th. Completion of our 5-hour private lesson is required prior to booking. Limited space available.
WHY THIS MATTERS
A portion of each charter supports Voyage of the Interlude, a children’s educational documentary series and curriculum centered on ocean literacy, curiosity, and real-world learning at sea.
By sailing with us, you are participating in the early chapters of a long-term project designed to inspire future generations to understand the ocean not as something abstract, but as something lived and known.
This is built into the structure of the experience, not as a donation, but as a way to sustain the vessel and the work it enables.
Check Out Our Educational Flagship
Voyage of the Interlude is an episodic educational documentary initiative that uses a bluewater sailboat as a mobile learning platform, integrating seamanship, science, and real-world problem-solving into an episodic format paired with a STEM curriculum created for teachers, homeschoolers, and families, including activities to engage children with the natural world.
