About Beyond Horizons

Beyond Horizons is an ocean education platform for kids and families.

It exists to help people understand how the world works through the sea, through story, observation, hands-on learning, and the kinds of questions that lead to deeper care.

The project brings together educational media, family-friendly curriculum, environmental systems thinking, and field-based storytelling to make the ocean more accessible and meaningful to everyday learners.

Beyond Horizons believes that slowing down, paying attention, and living closer to the natural world is not just good for us. It is essential for the future of our planet.

Who We Are

Meet Corah

Founder · Captain

Corah learned to sail in Michigan the summer of 2017 and became a sailing instructor just nine months later. Since then, she has taught over 1,500 children and adults to sail, worked on charter vessels, and even served aboard a 110-ft-tall ship. She has owned, refurbished, and lived aboard her own 30-ft sailboat, learning firsthand what it means to operate in real systems under real conditions.

Recently, Corah was awarded the National Women’s Sailing Association Scholarship to complete her USCG Master Captain’s License, a process that deepened both her technical competence and her commitment to safety, mentorship, and access to opportunities on the water.

At the same time, Corah brings a rigorous academic foundation to Beyond Horizons. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science, where her research focused on complex systems, decision-making under uncertainty, and context-based learning, themes that now drive the educational platform of this project. Her academic work explored how learners make meaning in real-world environments, how context influences cognition, and how structured inquiry can transform abstract concepts into actionable understanding.

Corah’s dual experience — as a sailor and a scholar — uniquely shapes the mission of Beyond Horizons. Her work bridges educational theory and lived practice, ensuring that every learning module, classroom connection, and public engagement is grounded in both rigor and reality.

She is passionate about expanding access to the water and to rigorous experiential learning. Corah’s leadership is driven by a belief that students learn best when they are challenged, supported, and placed in environments that require them to think holistically, whether that’s in the hull of a sailboat or the halls of a classroom.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

We are committed to making expedition-based learning accessible, not exclusive.

Scholarship opportunities expand access for students and educators who otherwise would never have the chance to participate in a marine experience, STEM connection, or experiential learning.

This is equity in opportunity and in access to powerful educational environments.
