About Beyond Horizons

Beyond Horizons was built on a simple idea that modern life has forgotten:

Some things can only be learned by going to sea.

We are a sailing school, charter platform, and educational media project built around a working ocean-going vessel, designed to turn wind, water, and curiosity into lasting knowledge.

At the center of Beyond Horizons is a belief that learning should be embodied, not abstract; earned, not handed down; and rooted in reality, not simulation. The ocean demands attention, humility, and responsibility, and in return, it teaches systems thinking better than any classroom ever could.

We accomplish this vision through four main branches:
1. Episodic documentary series and educational curriculum platform
2. Charter Sailing School

3. Sailing Scholarship for underprivileged and underrepresented youth in sailing and STEM.

4. Public outreach seminars.

We envision a future where ocean literacy and seamanship are practical, accessible skills, not niche privileges.

Beyond Horizons is building a long-term, floating education platform centered on a working sailboat, one that can serve as:

  • a classroom for students

  • a training vessel for adult sailors

  • a platform for environmental storytelling

  • and a bridge between science education and lived experience

Through Voyage of the Interlude and Sailing Scholarships, students encounter marine science through observation and curiosity. Through our sailing school, adults learn the practical skills required to move safely and confidently on the water, often on their own boats.

Our Vision

Voyage of the Interlude

From some of their first conversations, Jon and Corah knew they wanted to teach from a sailboat. They both share a passion for seamanship, ocean conservation, and teaching youth resilience, determination, and the importance of dreaming boldly, and of connecting to the natural world. Blending their expertise—Jon, an Emmy award-winning filmmaker and offshore cruiser, and Corah, a Ph.D. and USCG captain—produced the vision for this organization.

Our Story

Meet Corah

Captain · Educator · Producer

Corah learned to sail in Michigan the summer of 2017 and became a sailing instructor a short 9 months later. Since then, she has taught over 1,200 children and adults how to sail, worked on charter vessels, and even on a 110 ft tall ship. She has owned, refurbished, and lived aboard her own 30 ft. sailboat. Recently, she won the National Women’s Sailing Association scholarship to complete her USCG Master Captain’s License. She is passionate about giving opportunities to be on the water and access to sailboats to underprivileged and underrepresented youth.

Meet Jon

Filmmaker · Engineer · Producer

Jon grew up sailing on an alpine lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, with family trips to the San Francisco Bay Area to sail on his family’s Mason 43. On a family trip to the Caribbean, Jon fell in love with the idea of cruising. At the same time, Jon honed his filmmaking talent, winning student film festivals, and is now an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer. Jon has made a career of both filmmaking and sailing. He owns SV Prism, which he has sailed over 30,000 nm from the Pacific Northwest, through the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, and up the East Coast. Jon has also been crew for an Atlantic crossing. He is deeply passionate about good seamanship and teaching self-reliance.
